The Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Bin Liners

The Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Bin Liners

Selecting the right bin liner is more than just picking any garbage bag—choosing the right bag is important for effective waste management, hygiene, and sustainability. Whether you’re managing waste in a home, office, restaurant, or commercial facility, the right bin liner can help prevent leaks, control odors, and streamline disposal.

In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about choosing the right liner for your bin, including types, sizes, environmental considerations, and product recommendations that align with Pack To Work’s range of sustainable bin liners.

1. Understanding the Different Grades of Bin Liners

Not all bin liners are created equal (we know!). Here’s a breakdown of the most common types in our range:

Modest Range

This range is our budget friendly range, however it is worth noting that the strength of the bags in this range are the Best at their price point in the marketplace. It is indeed a Modest range. This range is suitable for light duty waste and high volume cleaning activities. Typically ideal for light waste disposal in schools, offices and similar commercial settings.

Able Range

This range is designed for everyday use, and is typically preferred by commercial cleaners who want an all purpose range of bin liners that they can use for the majority of their cleaning work. This is a stronger grade compared to the Modest Range and is Able to bag most general waste.

The Hero Range

This range is designed for cleaners that want something in between the All Purpose and the Heavy Duty range (some call it Medium Duty). We recommend this range to cleaners who just want something a little more heavy duty than the all purpose range but can’t fit the heavy duty bin bag prices into their budget. We call this the Hero range - it helps save the day with its amazing value! This range is great for those waste applications that are just a little too much for the all purpose or the Able range.

Proud Range

This range is designed for heavy duty use in commercial, industrial, and hospitality settings, and is capable of handling bulkier, heavier, and even sharp waste materials without tearing. We are certainly Proud of this range.

Xtreme Range

On the odd occasion, we get requests for something stronger than Proud range, something extra heavy duty. That’s why we have an Xtreme range. This range caters to the Extra heavy duty needs and is the strongest range that we have for bin liners in the starseal style. Very popular (and some say Xtreme) in busy restaurants and cafe settings.

Restaurant Grade Range

All the other bin liners from Modest to Xtreme come in starseal style, however many restauranteurs and cafe operators also prefer another seal type (either a gusseted seal or a flat seal). That’s why we have another range for this seal style, and it’s aptly named the “Restaurant Grade Range”. This range has a different style (gusseted and flat seal) and is also made from premium ReCree8 material, a certified resin made from 100% post-consumer soft plastics waste, to handle heavy food waste whilst promoting the circular economy.

2. Choosing the Right Bin Liner Size

Using the correct bin liner size ensures better waste containment, reduces mess, and prevents unnecessary plastic waste. Follow these guidelines to determine the right size:

  • For Round Bins: Measure the circumference (diameter × 3.14) and divide by two to find the liner’s open width. Add an extra 20% to the height to allow for overhang.
  • For Square/Rectangular Bins: Add the lengths of all four sides to get the total perimeter. Divide by two to determine the open width.
  • Consider Capacity: A liner should match or slightly exceed the bin’s capacity to avoid spills and overflows.

3. Factors to Consider When Choosing Bin Liners

Beyond size and type, here are key factors to consider when selecting a bin liner:

Strength & Durability

  • Light duty bags – Best for paper, tissues, and lightweight dry waste. (choose Modest or Able range for this)
  • Medium to Heavy duty bags – Suitable for mixed office or household waste. (choose The Hero or Proud range for this)
  • Heavy to Extra Heavy duty bags – Ideal for commercial, industrial, or sharp waste disposal (choose Proud, Xtreme or the Restaurant Grade range for this)

Leak Resistance & Odor Control

Opt for thick, well-sealed liners for wet or food waste to prevent leaks and odors. Compostable liners work well for food scraps.

Environmental Impact

If sustainability is a priority, opt for bin liners made with recycled plastic or compostable materials. Pack To Work’s ReCree8 PCR bin liners help businesses and households reduce their environmental footprint.

4. Best Practices for Using and Disposing of Bin Liners

Proper use and disposal of bin liners ensure efficient waste management and environmental responsibility.

Using Bin Liners Effectively

  • Avoid overfilling bins, as this can cause leaks and make removal difficult.
  • Tie bin liners securely before disposal to prevent spillage.
  • Store spare bin liners near your bins for easy replacement.

Proper Disposal & Sustainability Considerations

  • Compostable liners should only be disposed of in organic waste bins and commercial composting facilities.
  • Recyclable liners should be checked with local waste facilities for proper disposal.
  • General waste liners should be securely tied to prevent leaks before placing them in landfill waste bins.
